What a great performance by the two Soweto giants (Pirates & Chiefs)

Itumeleng Khune makes a desparing dive to try to stop Daine
Klate's free kick

What a well deserved victory by Pirates against Chiefs.

Not everyone expected a great performance done by Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs in their first leg match of the MTN cup match.

As I was reading an article on Sowetan that was published last week Thursday (22/08/2013) about Daine Klate commenting about the two-legged semifinal classes between the two giants that will likely be low-scoring, tactical affairs, etc. I came to think that the two Soweto giants will be scared to challenge one another tactically but I was wrongly proven. The two giant outplayed one another and the fans enjoyed every bit of that match.  The likes of Sfiso Myeni, Tlou Segolela outplayed Chiefs defenders and were rewarded with a phenomenal goal scored by Daine Klate. The fans were kept entertained and enjoyed the game. Orlando Pirates coach, Roger De Sa, guided the team to a hard-fought 1-0 victory against their Soweto rivals and he was proud with the results as it is his first win against chiefs as a coach in his three years with Orlando Pirates.
Those who still believe that the Soweto derby no longer have that spark it has in the 90’s, guess now that they have reconsidered what they said earlier about this two giants. Both teams played a carpet football and they were attacking at all times. Pirates dominated the first half and kept their performance consistently. But Chiefs came back and dominated the game. The likes of Nkatha and Musona changed the game on second half and kept Pirates defenders pressured. Now I tend to think ‘who will book a space to the MTN final between the two teams’?
This game had brought back that fever that fans loves most and they did all their best. The two coaches had done the great job through giving their players confidence to play free, be relaxed, and be themselves in the field. Both side boasted quality players and i guess no one now would predict how the second leg match wil be?

  1. The two Soweto giants put up a great performance. The first half belonged to Orlando Pirates, then Cheifs came back in the second half, even though they failed to level matters.

  2. This is a derby, the mother of all south african derbies... i think Kaizer chiefs will bounce back though Pirates are playing at home but there is not home ground when playing a derby

    1. Lets definately hope so. I think in the second leg, we will win because now they have enough confidence after the coach had a de-briefing with them after that game.
